What are flower essences?

Flower essence therapy is a gentle and powerful system of healing. Flower essences are liquid extracts used to support emotional wellbeing. They are referred to as a vibrational healing modality that works on the energy streams in the body which support mental, emotional, and therefore physical well-being.

This botanically-based healing system has existed since ancient times. Evidence suggests that flower essences have been used by civilizations such as the Ancient Egyptians, Sumerians and Chinese. They have also been used by most indigenous peoples all over the world such as the Native Americans and the Australian Aboriginals. Ancients believed the morning dew that appeared on the flowers contained healing properties. They would gather this dew and use it as ‘medicine’.

Every flower has a particular knowledge that imprints into that dew. When an individual ingests the dew, they integrate that healing information into their bio-energetic field.

In the past century, the concept of using flower essences to work on specific emotions was developed by Dr Edward Bach, an English Physician in the 1930’s.

Today flower essence therapy has flourished and gained worldwide recognition as a holistic health approach.

Many different brands of flower essences are available, I personally work with the Australian Bush Flowers.

Australian Bush flower essences

The Australian Bush Flower Essences meet the great need for remedies that help people address the issues of the 21st century - sexuality, communication skills and spirituality to name but a few. The answer to this need (which has come from the Australian plants), has been developed and researched by naturopath Ian White, a fifth generation Australian herbalist.

Ian grew up in the Australian bush. As a young boy his grandmother, like her mother before her, specialised in using Australian plants and would often take him bush walking. From her deep understanding she would point out the many healing plants and flowers. He learned a profound respect for nature through her and went on to become a practitioner and a pioneer working with and researching the rare remedial qualities of Australian native plants.

Australia has the world's oldest and highest number of flowering plants exhibiting tremendous beauty and strength. Also Australia is relatively unpolluted and metaphysically has a very wise, old energy.

At this time there is a tremendous new vitality in this country. This, combined with the inherent power of the land, is why the Australian Bush Flower Essences are so special and unique. Practitioners and prescribers world wide are now incorporating the Australian Essences to form an integral part of their therapy.

The Bush Remedies not only help to give clarity to one's life but also the courage, strength and commitment to follow and pursue one's goals and dreams. They help to develop a higher level of intuition, self esteem, spirituality, creativity and fun. The more the Essences are used, the more one is likely to experience greater awareness and happiness in one's life. Then everyone benefits: the individual, society and the planet.

The effect of these Essences is similar to that of meditation in that they enable the person to access the wisdom of their Higher Self. This releases negative beliefs held in the subconscious mind and allows the positive virtues of the Higher Self - love, joy, faith, courage etc. - to flood their being. When this happens the negative beliefs and thoughts are dissolved, balance is restored and true healing occurs.

What is involved in a flower therapy session?

In each session I will take a case history of the client. This can take 30-60 minutes. I will ask you questions about your current emotional state and triggers that are affecting you, your physical ailments and general well-being. It is important to consider past as well as present experiences in your life as these leave an imprint and mould your emotional patterns whether that is feelings of abandonment, anger, despair, grief or overwhelm. In addition what your aspirations or future goals are taken into consideration. I will select one or more essences for the major concern that needs to be addressed. Where several concerns are found, they may be addressed in stages.

How are the essences prepared?

Firstly a mother tincture is made. This is done by gathering the flowering parts and placing them in a bowl of water for infusion to occur under bright sunshine. The flower’s unique imprint is infused into the water and this water extract, is then diluted with alcohol to make the mother tincture. The mother tincture is then further diluted into a stock concentration and then further diluted into dosage strength which the patient takes. Flower essences are referred to as vibrational in nature.

A dosage bottle will contain spring water and a small amount of alcohol, to act as a perseverative and whichever combination of essences are selected.

A non-alcoholic formulation can be given for the dosage bottle also. The drops can be added to a cup of water or other liquid and sipped. You are given a dosage bottle where you take 7 drops in the morning and 7 drops before sleep and continue taking for minimium 21 days.

Why should i use them?

The field of psychoneuroimmunology acknowledges the harmful influence of stress on the immune and nervous system. Flower Essences can help. They are a gentle and effective way of supporting  a wide array of emotional dispositions that prevent an individual from living a happy, stress-free life. They  can also comfort us in times of distress.  Flower essences are a strong ally to wellness and can be integrated easily into any daily ritual.  You can add them to any liquid that you ingest or apply topically such as morning coffee, water, juice, shampoos. You can also add them to your scent diffuser or mopping solution.
